We don't sell generic packages or fixed tourist itineraries. TAITA creates independent, tailor-made journeys shaped by local knowledge, personal relationships, and a genuine respect for Mafia's people, wildlife and ocean rhythm.
“We did not arrive as tourists looking for a quick business opportunity. We arrived to live, work, build, and make this island our home.”
“We arrived with 250 kilograms of luggage, two dogs and a parrot — and, apparently, absolutely no intention of packing for a short stay.”
In May 2016, our East African journey brought us to Mafia Island — with 250 kilograms of luggage, two dogs and a parrot. We had been invited to take over management of Mafia Island Lodge, the historic 1973 property that was, for years, the island's largest hotel. Managing it for six years gave us a privileged view of the destination, its seasons and its people.
We came to Mafia to work. We stayed because we fell in love with the island.
“It had become home. That year, we established TAITA Company Ltd.”
By 2022, Mafia had become home, not just an assignment. We founded TAITA Company Ltd at Kanga, to build the independent local partner the island was still missing — one that understands Mafia as a whole, not just a single lodge or activity.
Home base, and TAITA's office, since 2022.
“Some of the best partnerships don't begin around a meeting table. They grow naturally.”
TAITA brings together three partners with one thing in common: Mafia Island. Iris leads tourism and trade partnerships; Giuliano leads construction, investment and consultancy; and Ally, born and raised on Mafia, leads our boating and offshore fishing — and is, we may be biased, our favourite captain.
Ally — born and raised on Mafia, and our favourite captain.
“The journey does not simply move from safari to beach. It moves from the wildlife of the African bush to the wildlife of the Indian Ocean.”
Tanzania's first Marine Protected Area, established in 1995, with some of the healthiest coral in East Africa.
A resident whale shark population October–March, and migrating humpback whales in season.
No high-rise resorts, no manufactured sense of place. Tourism here stays connected to everyday island life.
An unexpected resident population in the island's interior. We are not joking.
“Rather than an endless activity list, our experiences are shaped around genuine ocean encounters, seasoned local captains, and timeless island heritage.”
Snorkel alongside whale sharks in their natural feeding grounds — one of only a handful of places on earth this is possible.

Discover DetailsFull-day sport fishing charters into some of the richest game-fishing waters on the Tanzanian coast.
Discover DetailsGlide through the channel on a hand-built wooden dhow, cold drinks aboard, as the sun drops behind the mangroves.
Discover DetailsA guided walk through Chole's 19th-century ruins, fruit bat sanctuary and the island's small local community.

From the wildlife and landscapes of the African bush to another extraordinary natural environment: the Indian Ocean. Marine wildlife, reefs, mangroves and island life continue the story while giving you time to slow down.
A balanced introduction combining sea, nature, island exploration and local experiences — without filling every day. Enough to discover Mafia, and enough free time to enjoy it.
A stay designed around diving, complemented by the right accommodation, logistics and experiences above the surface — particularly useful for couples or groups where not everybody dives.
A nature-led journey built, according to season and conditions, around whale sharks, humpback whales, marine ecosystems, birdlife — and the island's more unexpected wildlife. Yes, the hippos are real.
A diving journey can include wildlife. A safari extension can become a family adventure. A couple may simply decide tomorrow's plan can wait.
“We recommend the property because it fits the guest — not because it belongs to us.”
Twelve cottages on a forested ridge overlooking Chole Bay, with direct access to Mafia's best house reef.
“The ultimate pick for honeymooners and anyone who wants the reef right outside their door. We send our fussiest guests here first.”
Family-run beachfront cottages with a relaxed, unpretentious feel — five minutes from the marine park entrance.
“Perfect if whale sharks are the whole point of the trip, or if you just want to fall asleep to the sound of the tide.”
Solar-powered treehouses on a tiny island beside a Swahili ruin village — no electricity, no shoes, no noise.
“Not for travellers who need air-conditioning and TV. For romantics, dreamers, and anyone happy to trade power sockets for a baobab canopy.”
Send us the essentials — dates, guests, interests and budget range.
Usually by WhatsApp, with someone who actually knows the island.
Tailored and priced, open to changes — nothing is booked yet.
And stay reachable as a local point of contact while you travel.
“Our aim is not to replace the Tour Operator. It is to make Mafia easier, safer, and more profitable for you to sell.”
